What american universities have an archaeology department?

kiriana asked:

I’m just curiously looking for options right now. I read on some website that there are only 12 schools with an archaeology department, but didn’t say which schools. So I would really appreciate some help! Thanks!

Here is a website with program listings:

Sometimes it is a bit hard to pinpoint which universities have a purely archaeology department as anthropology is often included. This is because anthropology departments often offer archaeology courses as part of their curriculum. If there is not an archaeology program in the area that you are looking at, many people do major in anthropology and then go on to graduate school in a strictly archaeology program. Looking at specific schools’ pages will allow you to see if they do have a strictly archaeology department or if it is through their anthropology department.

However, as someone who seriously considered entering archaeology, you should know (if you don’t already) that the job market for archaeologists is bleak, the money sucks, and you pretty much have to get your Ph.D. if you want to get anywhere in the field. That was enough to discourage me, but if it is something you are passionate about then definitely pursue it.
